Gowan Scores 19 to Lead Sandburg Men Past ICC for 1st Victory

The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with an 80-61 triumph over Illinois Central on Saturday afternoon in the Broadway Classic hosted by Southeastern (Iowa).
Freshman Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) scored 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting to lead four Chargers (1-1) in double figures.
Sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) had 17 points and a team-best eight rebounds for Sandburg, and freshman Elias Akale (Ashdad, Israel/Mekif Tet) also scored 17. Freshman guard Kellian Thomas (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) added 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting for Sandburg, which led 43-24 at halftime.
The Chargers made 17 of 20 attempts from the free-throw line and held the Cougars to 31 percent (22 of 71) from the floor. Ian Milsteadt scored a game-high 21 for ICC.
Sandburg, which lost its opener 89-63 to Southeastern on Friday night, plays its home opener against St. Ambrose JV at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
