Nationally ranked Missouri State-West Plains pulled away down the stretch to defeat the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team 102-73 on Friday in the Reed Overhead Doors Classic hosted by Indian Hills.

The Chargers (7-3) grabbed a 28-27 lead in the first half, but the Grizzlies — ranked 16th in Division I — took a 48-40 advantage into halftime. Sandburg stayed within striking distance until the Grizzlies extended their lead in the final minutes to end the Chargers’ five-game winning streak.

Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) scored a team-best 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting for the Chargers. Freshman Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) went 5 of 6 from 3-point range and finished with a season-high 17 points for Sandburg.

West Plains’ Eric Lovett scored a game-high 26 and Sardaar Calhoun added 19 points. Each hit five 3s in the contest.

Sandburg is in action again at 7:30 p.m. tonight as it hosts Eureka JV.
