Chargers Open Season With Split at No. 8 John A. Logan

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team opened its season Friday with an upset of nationally ranked John A. Logan in the first game of a pair of contests with the Volunteers.
The Chargers took Game 1 5-4 behind a dazzling debut from freshman Jackson Porter (LaHarpe, Ill./Illini West). The Volunteers won Game 2 10-4 in five innings. The nightcap was delayed by darkness and then made official when rain wiped out Saturday’s scheduled third game.

- Sandburg opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run double from sophomore shortstop Braedon Blackford (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame).
- The Chargers extended their lead to 5-0 in the sixth as sophomore first baseman Cacey O’Brien (Moline, Ill./Moline) doubled in a run with two away and sophomore Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) followed with a two-run single.
- John A. Logan, the eighth-ranked team in Division I, got a run back in the sixth and put the tying run at second base in the seventh before Jacob Burg (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) got a groundout to pick up the save.
Sandburg Standout
Porter was impressive in his Chargers debut, allowing just an unearned run over six innings. The right-hander struck out four, walked one and gave up just three hits. He threw 51 of his 83 pitches for strikes.

Key Moments
- The Volunteers had four of their first five batters collect singles as they plated five first-inning runs.
- The Chargers used four walks and a pair of hits to scored four in the second and get back within a run, but Logan added another five-run inning in the fourth.
Sandburg Standout
Freshman second baseman Wynn Takacs (Tipton, Ind./Taylor) reached in both of his plate appearances out of the No. 9 spot in the order. He drew a bases-loaded walk and scored in the first, then added a base hit in the fourth.
