Sandburg Softball Kicks Off Season Along Gulf Coast

The Carl Sandburg College softball team opened its 2019 season over the weekend during its Spring Break trip to the Gulf Coast. Facing competition that had already played 20-plus games, the Chargers came away with a 1-4 record.

Key Moments
Leading 1-0 in the fifth, the Chargers extended their lead when Marie Marshall (LaFayette, Ill./Galva) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Rachel Barrington (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) followed by smacking a two-run double to right.
Sandburg Standout
Barrington was stellar in the circle as well, picking up the victory after allowing an unearned run on three hits over six innings.

- Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, the Chargers grabbed the lead on a two-run base hit to center off the bat of Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central). Benge came around to score for a 4-2 lead later in the inning when the Warhawks’ third baseman committed a two-out error.
- Coastal Alabama-East came back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning with a five-run frame as the Warhawks’ first four batters reached base.
Sandburg Standout
Sophomore second baseman Lizzie Malcolm (Moline, Ill./Alleman) popped a solo home run to left in the second to open the scoring and added an infield single in the sixth.

Sophomore pitcher Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County) kept the Chargers in the contest, allowing just one earned run over 4 2/3 innings. She struck out two and walked one.
