The Carl Sandburg College baseball team held on to win a slugfest, then settled for a tie in a pitcher’s duel in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at home against DuPage.
The Chargers came from behind to take Game 1 11-10 and played to a 2-2 deadlock in nine innings against the Chaparrals before the contest was called because of darkness.

Key Moments
- Trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers struck for five runs to grab the lead. Antonio Dominguez (Rock Island, Ill./United Township) doubled to right to plate Braedon Blackford (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) and Wynn Takacs (Tipton, Ind./Taylor) to tie the score.
- Jonah Burt (LaHarpe, Ill./Illini West) scored the go-ahead run later in the inning on an error before an RBI double from Tyler Womack (Moline, Ill./Moline) and RBI single from Hunter Darst (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) gave Sandburg an 11-8 cushion.
- DuPage put the tying run on second with one away in the seventh, but Jacob Burg (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) retired the next two batters with a strikeout and flyout to earn the victory in relief, his first as a Charger.

Womack reached base four times, going 3 for 3 with a double, walk and three RBIs.

Key Moment
All of the scoring took place in the first two innings. Down 2-1 in the second, a leadoff walk to Noah Hoepfner (East Moline, Ill./United Township) led to the tying run. Hoepfner moved to second on a Dominguez single, advance to third on a passed ball and scored on Koy Smith’s (Revere, Mo./Canton) sacrifice fly.
Sandburg Standout
Sophomore starter Nolan Struhs (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) fanned a career-high 15 batters while working seven impressive innings. The lefty allowed just four hits, walked three and threw 75 of his 117 pitches for strikes.
