Sandburg Softball Sweeps Black Hawk, Advances to Region IV Semis

After winning its first-ever Arrowhead Conference championship, the Carl Sandburg College softball team started its quest for a postseason title with a two-game sweep of Black Hawk in its Region IV Division II District B tournament quarterfinal series Thursday afternoon.
Sandburg (32-24) won Game 1 17-4 and took Game 2 5-1.
The Chargers advance to the semifinal round hosted by Highland on Saturday in Freeport. The four-team, double-elimination tournament concludes Sunday in Freeport, with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

Key Moment
After the Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Chargers grabbed the lead for good when Lauryn Campbell (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) hit a three-run home run in the bottom half for the first of three Sandburg longballs in the contest.
Sandburg Standout
Campbell collected three extra-base hits as she finished 4 for 4 with 3 runs and four RBIs. The freshman first baseman doubled twice and added a single to go with her three-run blast.

Key Moments
- Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the Chargers went ahead for good with a pair of tallies. Campbell reached on an error to open the inning, and Grace Wilmington (Chillicothe, Ill./Illinois Valley Central) tied it with an RBI hit to left. An error and single loaded the bases with one out for Haley Stevenson, whose sacrifice fly to right put Sandburg on top.
- Campbell gave the Chargers some breathing room in the fifth with a two-run homer for a 4-1 lead.
Sandburg Standout
Sophomore pitcher Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County) kept Black Hawk at bay before Sandburg could rally. The righthander went the distance in the circle, allowing a run on six hits while striking out three.
