Campbell Medalist With 74 as Sandburg Men's Golf Wins Charger Classic

Sophomore Grant Campbell (Earlville, Ill./Earlville) took medalist honors and the Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team won its opening tournament of the season at the Charger Classic on Thursday at Lake Bracken Country Club.

Campbell shot a 3-over-par 74 to be the top individual, helping the host Chargers to a 325 team total. Sandburg finished five shots ahead of runner-up Black Hawk’s 330 and seven ahead of third-place Highland in the seven-team event.

The Chargers also got a strong effort from freshman Grant Otting (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge), who was third overall with an 8-over 79. Sandburg’s score was rounded by an 81 from freshman Trace White (Mount Pleasant, Iowa/Mount Pleasant) and a 91 from freshman Kevin Greene (El Paso, Ill./El Paso-Gridley).

Bryant & Stratton’s Caden Fletcher was the individual runner-up with a 78, finishing four shots back of Campbell.

The Chargers head up Highway 34 to play in the Kewanee Dunes Classic at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Kewanee Dunes.
