Sandburg XC Teams Each Take 3rd in Aurora Spartan Classic

The Carl Sandburg College men’s and women’s cross country teams each took third in the junior college division at the Spartan Classic hosted by Aurora on Friday evening.

In the women’s 6K race, the Chargers posted three of the top 10 times among runners from two-year schools. Sophomore Nancy Jebet (Eldoret, Kenya/Tulwo Girls) was third with a time of 25:25.2, Anna Marino (West Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) took sixth in 26:43.1 and Caren Maiyo (Eldoret, Kenya) was eighth in 27:00.2.

Harper was the women’s team champion with 44 points, edging out DuPage by one point. Sandburg was third with 51 points, followed by Waubonsee with 70. Harper’s Roxanne Temple was the individual winner in the junior college division with a time of 25:06.5.

In the men’s 8K, Sandburg’s top finisher was Andrew Cation (Yates City, Ill./Farmington) in ninth place, but the Chargers had three other runners place in the top 15. Dixon Kiptoo (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipsangui Boys) was 12th in 28:54.5, Ryan Monson (Aledo, Ill./Mercer County) was 14th in 29:02.7 and sophomore Kevin White (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) was 15th in 29:56.4.

Sandburg finished with 80 points, good for third out of six two-year programs. Morton was first with 47 points, and Harper was runner-up with 60 points. Waubonsee’s Jordan VanBarriger was the individual winner — even among runners from 12 four-year schools — with a time of 25:22.1.

The Chargers compete in the Bradley Intercollegiate on Friday evening at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The men’s race will be at 5 p.m., followed by the women’s race at 5:45 p.m.
