Oakton broke a scoreless tie at halftime with three unanswered second-half goals to defeat the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team 3-0 on Saturday in a rain-shortened Region IV contest at Galesburg High School’s Van Dyke Field.

The Chargers (6-11-1 overall, 6-6-1 Region IV) were limited to just two shots on goal — one in each half — against a stingy back line for the Owls (10-4-1, 8-4-1).

Scoring chances for both sides were limited until Oakton broke through on a goal from Sebastian Padua in the 51st minute. The Owls’ Bukola Abdulwahab-Omoto controlled the ball into the corner and sent a cross into the middle of the box. Padua gathered it and rifled a shot into the top-left corner of the goal.

Bukola Abdulwahab-Omoto gave the Owls a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute, and the match was delayed in the 69th minute for more than half an hour because of lightning in the area. Bukola Abdulwahab-Omoto added his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute, and the game was called in the 83rd minute because of more lightning in the area.

Sandburg keeper George Mutimer (Colchester, England/Colchester) saved six of Oakton’s eight shots on goal.

The Chargers will play their final game of the regular season at 4 p.m. Thursday at Kankakee.
