Kourtlandt Martin (Evansville, Ind./Central) led the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals, lifting the Chargers to an 83-74 Arrowhead Conference victory Tuesday night at Illinois Valley.
The win helped Sandburg (18-8, 6-1) remain a game behind unbeaten Highland in the conference standings with three games to play and gave the Chargers a season sweep of the Eagles (14-12, 3-4).
Martin did it all for Sandburg against IVCC, scoring a game-high 23 points (including a 9-for-9 night at the free-throw line), grabbing seven rebounds, handing out seven assists and picking up three steals.
The Chargers shot a scorching 58 percent (30 of 52) from the field, including 10 of 18 (56 percent) from 3-point range. Martin, Tyler Houston (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville), Matt Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) and Ben Stipp (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) each knocked down two treys for the Chargers.
Wendling and freshman forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) each had 14 points and six boards for Sandburg, and Houston finished with 10 points. Freshman forward T.J. Pendleton (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) had a productive night off the bench with nine points on 4-for-4 shooting, five rebounds and a team-best three blocks.
Sandburg hits the road again Thursday for another Arrowhead game, at 7:30 p.m. at Black Hawk.
