Pavon, Matebesi Each Score Twice as Chargers Earn 1st Victory

The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team scored the first five goals of its match Monday afternoon against Kankakee and defeated the Cavaliers 6-2 at Kleine Field for its first victory of the season.

The Chargers (1-6-1 overall, 1-3-1- Region IV) totaled 22 shots (13 on goal) and got two goals and an assist each from sophomores Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) and Tumelo Matebesi (Pretoria, South Africa/Willowridge) in the lopsided win.

Grego Massengo (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a rebound goal after an initial shot from Ezechiel Biamungu (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg). The Chargers took a 2-0 lead into halftime behind Steven Lessi’s goal in the 29th minute.

Matebesi took a feed from Javier Pavon (Tombull, Texas/Klein Oak) in the 59th minute and scored to give Sandburg a 3-0 advantage. Mike Pavon converted a penalty shot in the 61st minute after Erick Suarez (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) was taken down in the box on Pavon’s cross from the left corner. Mike Pavon assisted on Matebesi’s second goal of the match in the 72nd minute to give the Chargers a 5-0 lead.

Kankakee (4-5) finally got on the board with a penalty in the 72nd minute and made it 5-2 in the 77thminute on Dylan Swearengen’s goal.

Mike Pavon closed out the scoring in the 89th minute he took a Matebesi pass on a run down the left side and slid it under the left arm of Cavaliers keeper.

The Sandburg defense did a solid job in front of keeper Saahil Kapoor (Guilford, England/Guilford County), who made three saves in the victory.

The Chargers will host Malcolm X at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Region IV action as they play the second of four straight home contests.
