Day's Gem in Opener Helps Chargers to Sweep of Illinois Valley

The Carl Sandburg College softball team closed out its home schedule with an Arrowhead Conference sweep of Illinois Valley on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers won 6-2 in the opener and 17-15 in Game 2 to pick up their sixth victory in the last eight games.

Key Moment
A two-run double from Maddi Benson (Spring Bay, Ill./Metamora) and RBI single by Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) lifted the Chargers to 3-0 first-inning lead.

Sandburg Standout
Chargers pitcher Allison Day (Beecher City, Ill./St. Anthony) took a shutout into the seventh inning. She allowed just one hit through six frames and finished with a five-hit complete game while walking one and striking out one.

Key Moment
A 10-run third by the Eagles cut the Chargers’ big early lead to 11-10, but Sandburg answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Key hits in the inning included a run-scoring single by Chelsey Catton (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and two-run double off the bat of Rylee Krebsbach (Aledo, Ill./Sherrard).

Julia Vosburgh (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) was one of three Chargers with three hits in the contest, going 3 for 4 with a double, walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.
