How do I earn my food protection manager certification?
- Register for and complete an approved certified food protection manager course. Sandburg uses the National Restaurant ServSafe food protection manager certification, which is in an ANSI-CFP Accredited Program (American National Standards Institute and Conference for Food Protection) ANSI accreditation website. The eight-hour course prepares you for the exam, which is administered and proctored on the class date.
- A score of 75 or better is required to pass the exam and earn your ServSafe food protection manager certification. ServSafe certificates are sent by email and not forwarded to residential or business addresses. Have your email address handy (or create an email account if you don't have one) at class for placement on the exam sheet. Please speak with the class instructor if you do not have access to a computer, the internet, or a printer.

What is the certified food protection manager class registration fee?
- The cost is $145 and includes the examination. You must be pre-registered and make the full payment in advance of the class date. You can pay for your enrollment, or businesses may contact the Workforce Development & Community Education department to sponsor an employee's attendance. Cash, credit/debit card, check, or money orders are accepted. Cost and conditions are subject to change without notice. You're responsible for being aware of your food protection manager certification renewal date. Early registration is encouraged, as classes may fill to capacity in a short amount of time.

- Classes are held on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with breaks provided throughout the day and a lunch break around noon.

What if I am unable to attend class due to illness or a family emergency?
- We understand emergencies arise. You can reschedule your class date one time as long as the Workforce Development & Community Education staff are notified before the class begins. You should call 309.345.3501 and leave a message stating your full name, phone number, and reason for the absence. Refunds will not be issued for classes dropped after the class start time. Missing a class may move you beyond your required certification renewal date.
Will I receive a reminder call or email prior to the class date?
- Yes, one or two days before your class, you will receive a call and/or email reminder. After enrolling in the class, please notify the Workforce Development & Community Education department of any changes to your email address or phone number. The college staff is not responsible for any missed reminder messages.
What do I need to bring on the day of the class?
- A photo ID and ink pen or pencil. You may also wish to bring paper to take notes on during class. A score of 70 or better is required to pass the exam and earn your ServSafe food protection manager certification.
- Beverages are permitted as long as they are in a cup or bottle with a lid.
Is there a class textbook?
- No; however, you will receive study guides at your time of registration. The study guides do not include all the exam questions you will see, but they are good resources and should be brought to your class for review purposes.
What if I do not pass the exam?
- A score of 70 or better is required to pass the food protection manager certification multiple-choice exam. For a $36 fee, you may take the exam twice within a 30-day period. If a third attempt is required, you must wait at least 60 days from your last attempt. An exam may only be taken four times within a year. You may register for the course as many times as you wish — each course registration fee is $145. Please call 309.345.3501 for further information or to register.

- Please dress in layers, as the classroom temperature can fluctuate. Smoking (including e-cigarettes) and tobacco are prohibited on all campus grounds (including inside vehicles).
- Request for non-academic disability support accommodations
*On rare occasions, a class may be canceled due to low enrollment numbers or for other unforeseen circumstances. Enroll early to complete the course in advance of your certified food protection manager renewal date.
