Tutoring services

The Carl Sandburg College Tutoring Program is a fantastic, free resource for all students. Through tutoring, our goal is to provide friendly, accessible academic assistance in all subject areas. Students on the Galesburg campus interested in any of the resources listed below should visit the Tutoring Center in room B72 for more information. Students in Carthage, online students and dual-credit students who are interested in tutoring options should see our distance tutoring.

The Tutoring Center

The Tutoring Center, located in B72 on the Galesburg campus, is the place to go for help with all your core classes, from math and science to writing, Spanish and general-study skills. Tutoring is available primarily on a walk-in basis, though students can call ahead to schedule an appointment.

Tutoring sessions are casual student-initiated, student-centered and student-driven interactions. You'll get the most out of the Tutoring Center’s services when you come well before an assignment is due and  you're prepared to work. Students often come for clarification, extra practice, brainstorming and planning, or guidance on their homework. Tutoring is not a homework correction service; rather it is an educational opportunity for additional instruction that enables you to work on your own with more confidence.

Tutoring subjects

Students should feel comfortable coming to the Tutoring Center for help with all kinds of subjects, including (but not limited to):

  • Grammar and mechanics
  • Essays for composition courses, history, psychology, sociology, business and more
  • Creative writing
  • Resumes and scholarship applications
  • Math from fundamentals through calculus
  • Science such as physics, chemistry and biology
  • Nursing
  • Statistics, business and marketing
  • Spanish
  • Keyboarding and basic computer usage
  • Study skills

Please check in with the tutors to see what subjects are available at what times. Tutoring emphases and schedules vary from semester to semester.

CTE tutoring

Tutoring is available for many Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, such as computer information systems and nursing. CTE tutoring is arranged by semester and by department, sometimes scheduled around class meeting times. If you want to know more about tutoring in a particular CTE subject, email Stefani Gillen, coordinator of academic support, or call 309.341.5262.

Online tutoring

You also have access to tutoring any day, any time with Brainfuse. This online tutoring is free, one-on-one, real-time tutoring via your computer, tablet or smartphone. Brainfuse records your documents and tutoring sessions, so they're easily accessible as study notes later or sent to your instructor. Best of all, it’s a tutoring service that conforms to your schedule — even if that means you’re getting tutored at 3 a.m.! Brainfuse also offers skill-building exercises, video tutorials, practice tests and much more.

Head over to your mySandburg page to get started. Click on the Brainfuse link to be automatically logged in from your mySandburg page or, if your instructor has enabled it, your Moodle course page.

Distance tutoring

If you're attending the Carthage campus, attending online or are a dual-credit student, you still have tutoring options available to you. In addition to Brainfuse online tutoring, Skype sessions with tutors at the Galesburg campus's Tutoring Center are available by arrangement. If you're interested, contact the coordinator of academic support services.
