Culinary Training Program

Sandburg is thrilled to offer a hands-on non-credit Culinary Training Program designed to prepare students for employment in the food service industry. This immersive experience combines classroom instruction, industry certifications, and real-world training in partnership with local restaurants.
Program Overview: Over the course of three months, seven students will be placed in local restaurant kitchens to gain practical experience while participating in structured weekly training sessions led by culinary professionals. The program emphasizes skills such as food safety, kitchen operations, menu planning, budgeting, and employability skills.


Key Program Features:

  • Restaurant Placement: Each student is assigned to a local restaurant for on-the-job training.
  • Weekly Instructor Check-ins: Regular one-on-one sessions to support student progress and address challenges.
  • Industry Certifications: Includes Allergen Awareness and Food Protection Management Certification.
  • Specialized Training: Covers kitchen fundamentals, inventory management, restaurant business operations, and etiquette.
  • Community Engagement: Includes a farm/vendor visit, Thanksgiving box preparation, and a community luncheon.
  • Capstone Event: The program concludes with a celebratory banquet showcasing student achievements.
This program is generously funded by the Hunger Collaborative Grant, sponsored by the Galesburg Community Foundation, supporting workforce development and food security initiatives in our region.

The first 7 students and restaurants that complete the interest forms will receive a spot in the program.
