Steps to getting started

  1. Submit admissions application.
  2. Complete Sandburg's ESL exam (Pending additional details but it will likely look similar to the calendar used for Accuplacer, Gabi will provide link at a later time)
  3. Meet with an ESL transition specialist for course registration.
  4. Apply for financial aid and scholarships (optional).

FAQs

What is college credit ESL?

College credit English as a second language classes are developmental college classes that English language learners can complete prior to enrolling in a college academic program. Students pay full tuition for classes.

What is non-credit ESL?

Non-credit ESL classes are free training opportunities offered by Sandburg's Workforce Development and Continuing Education department. These classes are typically one month in length and course topics include ESL in the workplace, college readiness and advanced general ESL.

What is tuition?

After I apply, what's my next step?

Before enrolling in classes, students must complete a language placement test. Your level is determined by your score on the test.

What if I've already completed ESL coursework elsewhere?

That's great! You can provide transcripts of previous ESL coursework and/or testing scores to assist in determining proficiency level. You may still need to complete Sandburg's language placement exam regardless of prior coursework.

How many classes do I register for?

You'll enroll in two classes (6 credits total) based on your level of proficiency.

How long is the program?

Beginner: Eight weeks
Intermediate: Eight weeks
Advanced: Eight weeks
Example: Students starting at the beginner level would enroll in three semesters.

When do classes begin?

Classes begin fall semester. More details to come.

Yes, you can apply for financial aid and scholarships.
