Steps to getting started

  1. Submit admissions application.
  2. Complete Sandburg's ESL exam (Pending additional details but it will likely look similar to the calendar used for Accuplacer, Gabi will provide link at a later time)
  3. Meet with an ESL transition specialist for course registration.
  4. Apply for financial aid and scholarships (optional).


*A high school diploma or high school equivalency is required for financial aid.

 

FAQs

College credit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are developmental college courses that English language learners complete before enrolling in a college academic program. Students pay full tuition for these classes.

Non-credit ESL classes are free training opportunities offered through Sandburg's Workforce Development and Continuing Education department. These classes are typically one month long and include topics such as workplace ESL, college readiness and advanced general ESL.

Before enrolling in classes, you'll complete a language placement test. Your course level is determined by your placement test score.

Great! You can provide transcripts from previous ESL coursework and/or language proficiency test scores to help determine your placement. Depending on your prior coursework, you may still need to complete Sandburg's language placement exam.

You'll enroll in two classes (6 credit hours total) based on your level of English proficiency.

  • Beginner: 8 weeks
  • Intermediate: 8 weeks
  • Advanced: 8 weeks

Example: Students who begin at the beginner level typically complete three semesters of coursework.
